Sex addiction also known as Compulsive Sexual Behavior—describes a pattern in which sexual thoughts or behaviors begin to feel out of control and continue despite unwanted consequences. This is not about having a high sex drive, being sexually adventurous, or having “too much” desire. Instead, it’s about the relationship someone has with their sexual behavior and the impact it has on their life and relationships.
Many people struggling with compulsive sexual behavior use sex, pornography, or fantasy as a way to cope with stress, emotional pain, loneliness, anxiety, or shame. While the behavior may bring temporary relief, it is often followed by guilt, secrecy, disconnection, or emotional distress. Over time, this cycle can interfere with intimacy, trust, self-esteem, work, and overall well-being.
In therapy, the focus is not on suppressing sexuality or enforcing abstinence. Treatment is sex-positive, trauma-informed, and values-based, helping clients:
